Stanford STEP

Six years teaching restorative practice to aspiring teachers, before they ever lead a classroom.

The situation

The Stanford Teacher Education Program prepares aspiring teachers for the classroom. Restorative practice is one of the hardest things for a new teacher to carry, because it is not a technique, it is a way of holding a room. STEP wanted its teachers formed in it before their careers began.

What we did

For six years, Remi and Kendra taught a seminar on restorative justice inside STEP, forming cohort after cohort of aspiring teachers in the practice: the mindset underneath it, restorative conversations, circles, and how to hold culture in a classroom from day one.

Built to last

This is develop-mode work in its purest form. There is no platform here, just people. Every teacher who carried the practice into their first classroom carried it for a career. Six years of cohorts is six years of classrooms that hold.
